Bank safe deposit box or private vault: what does it really cost over 10 years?

In Belgium, a private safe deposit box outside the banking system costs €240 to €350 a year depending on size, published annual price, payable in advance, against €80 to €720 a year for a bank box, depending on size and institution (Le Soir, 3 January 2025). With the default settings, ten years cost €2,800 for the cited medium private box and an estimated €2,000 indicative bank rent. But the bare rent is not the whole story:

  • The trade-off is about value for money and security, not rent alone: the calculation basis below lists every assumption and its sources.
Calculation basis (indicative estimates, November 2026). Private box: the public grid of Gold & Silver Company, in force on 3 November 2026: €240, €280, €300 and €350 a year depending on size, payable in advance. Bank box: indicative rent per size (small €180, medium €200, large €220, extra large €370 a year), aligned with BNP Paribas Fortis's 2025 grid and with KBC's 140 to 174 dm³ format, within the €80 to €720 a year range recorded by Le Soir on 3 January 2025, excluding contents insurance and extra fees. Every situation is specific: always check real conditions with providers and with your insurer.

Why this calculation has changed in recent years

ING, the first major Belgian bank to leave the market, stopped renting entirely in late 2023 and now sends customers to an external provider (L'Écho). The three other major banks maintain a shrinking service: KBC and CBC still showed 81,707 rented boxes in late November; over the same year, Belfius declared 77,877 and BNP Paribas Fortis 68,676, of which only 29% occupied (Le Soir, 3 January 2025). RTBF sums up the trend: more than half of bank boxes are said to be empty, and rentals fall by 10 to 15% a year (RTBF, 10/03/2023).

Meanwhile, bank prices are rising. The smallest format, billed €45 a year in 2023, costs €180 in 2025 at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis alike, after a step at €90 in 2024 (VRT, 6 February 2025). At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies (Mouscron), rental runs from €240 a year (small box, 100 mm high) to €350 a year (extra large, 330 mm high), for a width of 330 mm and a depth of 500 mm, payable in advance.

That is the whole point of the calculator: put a euro figure on the gap, then leave the judgement to each reader. The detailed tally of bank prices has its own page, and the question of contents insurance another one.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of a box

Ten-year totals, the numbered formula, switching from a bank: the concrete answers before you cost your own case.

What exactly does the 10-year total include?
The total is a simple multiplication: the annual rent of the chosen option, times the number of years. For the private box, it uses the published annual grid of Gold & Silver Company, payable in advance: €240, €280, €300 or €350 a year depending on size. For the bank, it uses an indicative rent per size, aligned with BNP Paribas Fortis's 2025 grid (€180, €200 and €220 a year) and with KBC's 140 to 174 dm³ format (€370 a year), excluding contents insurance and extra fees. Every provider and every contract has its own terms.
Can the rent of a private box change from one year to the next?
The contract is annual and payable in advance: the price paid for the current year cannot move. One month before the deadline, an invitation to renew arrives, settled without travelling, by email then bank transfer, or at the agency desk. Cancelling takes a registered letter and ten days' notice, and any year started is due. On the banking side, recent rises are documented: the smallest size went from €45 in 2023 to €180 in 2025 at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis alike (VRT).
What is the €10-a-month numbered formula?
It is the formula without an assigned box: your belongings are kept under a number rather than under your name, within a shared secure space covered by the same protection apparatus as the boxes. Price: €10 a month, with cover announced at 10 million euros. Signing up requires an identity document, and the price is paid before the formula takes effect.
Does the total anticipate future price rises?
The displayed prices are those recorded on 3 November 2026; each format has its price, payable in advance.

Sources and method

The calculator's totals are multiplications of public prices: the grid of Gold & Silver Company, and per-size indicative rents aligned with published bank grids, within the range recorded by Le Soir. They constitute neither a quote nor financial or tax advice; only the terms of each provider and of your insurer prevail. Whatever could not be verified online was removed from this page.
