ING

No longer rents safe deposit boxes. The exit, started in 2022, was completed in late 2023: the bank terminated contracts in phases and directed customers to a network brand. In early 2023 it still had 70,000 boxes, of which fewer than 30% were rented.

The rise curve: €45, €90, €180

The price of the smallest bank box has quadrupled in three years, according to customer testimonies gathered by the WinWin programme (VRT, 6 February 2025).

The same movement shows in customer statements: on the Spaargids forum, a KBC customer details €32.80 for years, €45 from 2017 to 2022, €90 in 2023 and 2024, then €180. Belfius and Argenta remain slightly cheaper depending on size, and Crelan still rents boxes (VRT). The largest bank format, one cubic metre, reaches €510 a year at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis alike.

Why prices are rising

The Belgian financial sector federation confirms it in L'Avenir (4 June 2025): branch rentals are falling while private safe deposit companies grow.

As a result, the advertised price increasingly depends on the contract date, and two customers of the same bank can pay different rents.

In contrast, the private box outside banks follows a public grid, payable in advance: Gold & Silver Company rents for €240, €280, €300 and €350 a year across four sizes, with no bank account, and €10 a month for numbered custody (official grid). The calculator on the home page works out the gap over 1 to 20 years from these public prices; for contents insurance, see the dedicated page.

Frequently asked questions about bank box prices

Ranges, rises, gaps between customers, checking the grids: what people in Belgium ask before they pay.

What is the full price range for a bank safe deposit box in Belgium?
From €80 to €720 a year depending on size and institution, according to the tally published by Le Soir on 3 January 2025. In practice, small formats sit between €80, the entry price at Belfius, and €180 at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis. Family formats hover around €200 to €220 a year, and very large volumes exceed €369.99 at KBC, reaching €510 per cubic metre at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis alike (VRT, 6 February 2025). Each network publishes its grid by capacity, in cubic decimetres.
By how much did the rent of the smallest KBC box rise?
From €45 in 2023 to €180 in 2025, four times more in three years, with a step at €90 in 2024, according to testimonies gathered by the WinWin programme (VRT, 6 February 2025). On the Spaargids forum, a customer details the same trajectory on his statements: €32.80 for years, €45 from 2017 to 2022, €90 in 2023 and 2024, then €180. BNP Paribas Fortis shows the same €180 price for its smallest box. The rise is not an isolated case: it hits at least two major banks.
How much do the largest boxes still available at banks cost?
The largest bank format, about one cubic metre, costs €510 a year at KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis alike (VRT, 6 February 2025). At KBC, a box of 140 to 174 cubic decimetres is billed €369.99 a year according to the grid recorded by Spaargids. The top of the range published by Le Soir reaches €720 a year. As of what date was each bank grid recorded?

These are dated snapshots, not contractual grids: only the grid your branch gives you on your contract date prevails.
Where can I check the real price of a box before signing up?
Ask your branch or your bank's website for the official grid by size: KBC, BNP Paribas Fortis and Belfius publish their prices by capacity. Then compare with the public grid of a private provider: Gold & Silver Company shows €240, €280, €300 and €350 a year across four sizes, payable in advance and without a bank account, and €10 a month for numbered custody. The calculator on the home page works out the gap over the period that matters to you, from these public prices.
